PROVIDENCE- Rhode Island prices for self serve, regular unleaded gasoline increased 4 cents this week to average $2.99 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast Tuesday.
Rhode Island’s current price ranks three cents above the national average of $2.96, and reflects a 65 cent increase from last year’s average price of $2.34 per gallon.

Regular gas prices in Rhode Island ranged 41 cents from $2.78 to $3.19 per gallon.
- Midgrade gas averaged $3.15 per gallon, ranging from $2.88 to $3.39 per gallon
- Premium gas averaged $3.31 per gallon, ranging from $2.99 to $3.49 per gallon
- Diesel fuel averaged $3.24, ranging from $3.05 to $3.45 per gallon
In Massachusetts, the price of regular gas increased 5 cents this week to reach $2.92, 4 cents below the national average of $2.96. Last year, late-May gas prices were 61 cents lower at $2.31 per gallon.
Massachusetts regular gas prices ranged 33 cents from $2.76 to $3.09 per gallon.
- Midgrade gas averaged $3.12, ranging from $2.89 to $3.43 per gallon
- Premium gas averaged $3.27, ranging from $2.99 to $3.55 per gallon
- Diesel fuel averaged $3.20, ranging from $3.09 to $3.39 per gallon
“At the start of the holiday weekend, reports indicated that OPEC may raise production levels to help ease global supply concerns,” stated Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs. “That announcement immediately brought down the price of crude. This could become welcome news to motorists who are paying the highest prices to fill up since 2014.”
