PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College’s James P. Adams Library will house Rep. James R. Langevin’s collection of congressional documents and photos to be both preserved and put on public display.

RIC says Langevin’s collection to be displayed inside the library includes legislation that was either sponsored or cosponsored by him, briefing materials, speeches and floor remarks, press files, photographs and other accomplishments during his congressional service.

The materials, which include approximately 30 boxes of items and a cache of electronic records, began arriving in November, RIC said.

RIC digital archivist and special collections librarian Veronica Denison estimates it will take approximately three months to organize and archive, the college said. The materials are expected to be available for public access sometime in April.

Once available, the materials will be open to the public by appointment only inside the library’s special collections reading room Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“After serving the people of Rhode Island in Congress for the last 22 years, I hope that this collection will contribute to future scholarship about my work on behalf of Rhode Island, the study of Congress, and the history of our beloved state,” Langevin said in a statement.

Langevin, a Democrat who has spent 11 terms representing the state’s 2nd congressional district, did not seek reelection this past year. Democrat and former R.I. Treasurer Seth Magaziner was elected Nov. 8 to succeed Langevin in the U.S. House of Representatives.
