PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Office of Energy Resources has unveiled $35 million in incentives to encourage the installation of household heat pump systems.
Part of the New England Heat Pump Accelerator program, which aims to boost heat pump adoption to 90% for residential space heating and cooling by 2040, the accelerator provides pass-through incentives available at heat pump distributors to reduce heat pump system costs for households.

Incentives vary based on the type of heat pump but overall, they will reduce upfront costs for homeowners and streamline the purchasing process, according to an OER news release.
“The New England Heat Pump Accelerator will lower upfront costs for homeowners and build on the progress we’ve already made through Clean Heat Rhode Island,” said Gov. Daniel J. McKee. “This practical, results-driven program will help Rhode Islanders looking to update their household energy systems by keeping more money in their pockets while reducing their energy usage.”
With incentives such as $300 for heat pump water heaters and $650 for air-source systems, advocates say the program ensures that contractors can provide benefits directly at the point of purchase.
Chris Kearns, acting commissioner of the R.I. Office of Energy Resources, said the focus “is to reach consumers with the greatest savings potential and remove the barriers that have kept efficient heating out of reach.”
Kearns added, “The pass-through incentive model is especially important because it eliminates the upfront cost hurdle for households and simplifies the process for qualified heat pump contractors.”
