PROVIDENCE – Prices for regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island remained at $2.88 per gallon this week, according to AAA Northeast, 5 cents below the national average of $2.83 per gallon.
Last year at this time, prices were 55 cents lower in Rhode Island at $2.33 per gallon.

Prices for regular gas ranged 32 cents, from $2.77 to $3.09 per gallon.
“Compared to July, consumer demand for gasoline is lessening and prices are starting to follow suit,” noted Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs. “The national average is expected to keep moving lower, especially with the switchover to lower grade gasoline in September.”
Prices for other grades of fuel this week:
- Midgrade gas averaged $3.21 per gallon, ranging from $3.04 to $3.39 per gallon
- Premium gas averaged $3.38 per gallon, ranging from $3.24 to $3.49 per gallon
- Diesel fuel averaged $3.17 per gallon this week, ranging from $2.99 to $3.29 per gallon
In Massachusetts, regular gas prices declined 1 cent to $2.82 per gallon, 1 cent lower than the national average. Prices ranged 28 cents from a low of $2.71 to a high of $2.99 per gallon.
Last year at this time, regular gas in Massachusetts averaged 58 cents lower at $2.24 per gallon.

- Midgrade gas in Massachusetts averaged $3.06 per gallon this week, ranging from $2.83 to $3.29 per gallon
- Premium gas averaged $3.29 per gallon, ranging from $3.05 to $3.49 per gallon
- Diesel fuel averaged $3.16, ranging from $2.99 to $3.39 per gallon
