PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island has been designated $21.6 million in federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program funds, Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., announced Monday.

The program, overseen by the U.S. Department of Human Services, helps low-income households with their home energy bills. It aids in paying for the increased cost of energy or by reducing the cost of an energy-related crisis.

“As temperatures begin to drop, LIHEAP funds are a lifeline for many vulnerable Americans. Each year, this vital program helps thousands of Rhode Island families to keep the heat on and stay warm. No one should have to choose between paying their heating bills and paying for other essentials [such as] food and medicine,” said Reed in a statement.

Eligibility for the program is determined by income, family size and availability of resources.
