PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island motorists can now dial 511 when they see a dangerous pothole. The state on Wednesday launched the hotline and online dashboard that will allow motorists to report and track pothole repairs on state roads, which have been consistently ranked among the worst in the nation. “After one of the harshest winters Rhode Island has ever seen, our RIDOT crews are out in full force filling potholes and repairing roads,” Gov. Daniel J. McKee said. “These new tools will streamline the process, making it easier and quicker for Rhode Islanders to report potholes on state roads. It’s simple: see it, report it, and we’ll handle the rest.” Operators will be standing by live 24/7 to take motorists reports. The information will be immediately entered into the R.I. Department of Transportation’s work-order system. Motorists can also file reports on potholes online. “We are pleased to provide these tools for the public to make it easier for them to let us know about potholes they see on our roads so we can get them fixed right away,” RIDOT Interim Director Bob Rocchio said. “In the meantime, all our maintenance districts have been proactively patrolling the roads to identify and fill potholes.” State officials said the hotline is only to report potholes on state roads. Residents are advised to report any potholes on a town or city road to the respective municipal public works department. So far this year, approximately 630 potholes have been reported to RIDOT, and nearly 600 have been filled. Crews are out daily patching roads as weather conditions allow, using roughly 500 tons of asphalt so far this season. Last month, Rhode Island’s highway system was ranked 43rd in the nation for overall cost-effectiveness and condition in the 29th annual Highway Report released by the Reason Foundation. The state also ranked poorly for rural arterial pavement condition (49th) and urban arterial pavement condition (48th). A January Consumer Affairs report ranked Rhode Island third-worst in the nation, a drop from fifth-worst in 2025, with 60% of urban roads in poor condition – the worst of any state. For rural roads, the state ranked 47th with 29% in poor condition.
