PROVIDENCE – Over the Independence Day holiday weekend, the R.I. State Police received 953 calls for service and conducted 486 motor vehicle stops, the RISP said Tuesday.
The figures cover the five-day period from July 3 through July 7.

In that time, there were nine arrests made by the State Police of individuals charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“There is simply no excuse for anyone driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol,” Col. James M. Manni said. “The Rhode Island State Police will continue to aggressively pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone who drives while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, putting the lives of everyone else at risk.”
State troopers issued 507 citations over the holiday weekend, including 135 speeding citations, 57 seat belt and child-restraint violations and 19 citations for distracted driving.
RISP also investigated 61 motor vehicle crashes over the five-day holiday.
