PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in Rhode Island in September was 3.6%, tied for the highest rate in New England, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday.

The unemployment rate in the Ocean State declined 0.3 percentage points year over year, tied for the third-highest percentage-point decline in the region with Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Rhode Island’s unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than the national rate.

Rhode Island was one of three states in the region with a year-over-year labor force decline along with Maine and Connecticut. New Hampshire was the only state in the region to see an increase in the number of unemployed year over year.

Nonfarm payrolls increased in all six New England states.

New England unemployment rates in September:

  • Vermont: 2.2%, a 0.4 percentage-point decline year over year.
  • New Hampshire: 2.5%, a 0.1 percentage-point increase year over year.
  • Maine: 2.9%, a 0.6 percentage-point decline year over year.
  • Massachusetts: 2.9%, a 0.3 percentage-point decline year over year.
  • Connecticut: 3.6%, a 0.3 percentage-point decline year over year.
  • Rhode Island: 3.6%, a 0.3 percentage-point decline year over year.
