PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would expedite the transaction that involves the merger of two hospital systems and the sale of a single hospital. The bill will now head to the House of Representatives for consideration.
In April Care New England announced that it was merging with Boston-based Partners Healthcare of Massachusetts, while at the same time selling off Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island to Prime Heathcare Foundation, which currently owns and operates The Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. The merger is subject to review and approval from the R.I. Department of Health and the R.I. Attorney General’s office. The proposed bill would expedite that process.

Learn More“This legislation will keep Memorial Hospital’s doors open so that the surrounding community continues to receive the care that they rely upon every single day. It is critical that Memorial Hospital’s fate is determined in a timely manner so that the patients who use the hospital’s services may plan accordingly. The hospital as it currently stands is in financial hardship, which could cause a cut in services and jobs, and this legislation would allow the parties to work quickly to affect a change in ownership that may keep these vital services.” said Sen. Elizabeth A. Crowley, D-Central Falls.
