PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked No. 6 on a list of the most expensive places to get married in the United States, according to the digital wedding brand site, The Knot, this week.

The average cost of a wedding in Rhode Island was $52,777.  In 2016, Rhode Island ranked No. 8 on The Knot’s list with an average price of $52,328.

The average cost of a wedding in the U.S. in 2017 was found to be $33,391, lower than the average price in 2016, which averaged $35,329.

The Knot attributed the U.S. average price drop to a decline in black-tie weddings and a rise of nontraditional locations for weddings.

The numbers come from a survey of 13,000 couples married in 2017 across the U.S.

Manhattan in New York City ranked No. 1 for most expensive in the study at an average price of $76,994. The Cape Cod area in Massachusetts ranked No. 5 on the list at an average price of $55,083, while Boston ranked No. 13 at $40,667. Rhode Island was considered a single area in the study.

Both New York and California areas dominated the list with four and five of the top 25 most expensive areas for weddings for 2017, respectively.

New Mexico was rated the least expensive area to have a wedding at an average price of $17,584.
