WALTHAM, Mass. – Raytheon Co., the Waltham, Mass.-based defense contractor with a facility in Portsmouth, beat Alliant Techsystems Inc. for a U.S. Army contract valued at $232.3 million to develop a precision-guided ammunition round for a new weapon system.
The XM 1111 Mid-Range Munition contains an infrared sensor and laser seeker for guidance, Raytheon said last week in a statement, Bloomberg News Service reported.
The round is 120-millimeter, gun-fired “smart” ammunition that will be used on the Future Combat System’s Mounted Combat System. The weapon will allow U.S. forces to strike at enemy targets beyond the line of sight. Work on the Mid-Range Munition will be done in Tucson, Arizona.
The award only covers weapon development and doesn’t include funding for production, Raytheon spokesman John Farlow said.
