SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Earlier this fall, the University of Rhode Island began its $57.3 million project to renovate and make major upgrades to the Fine Arts Center on campus.

The project, funded in part by a $107 million voter-approved bond initiative to finance renovation projects at all three of Rhode Island’s state colleges – URI, Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island – involves removing half of the URI fine arts building, the university said, and installing an 82,000-square-foot new academic building for the programs side.

Once the renovations are complete, the fine arts building at URI will feature a new theater lobby, modern acting classrooms, technical areas for digital art and media, recording studios, improved acoustics, and additional public space and natural light. The renovations are expected to be finished by the end of 2024, URI said.
