PROVIDENCE – The sale of "The Conjuring” house is off for now after an agreement by both parties in R.I. Superior Court, WPRI-TV CBS 12 reported. The court agreement came after a closed-door meeting on Jan. 7. The sister of the current homeowner, Jacqueline Nuñez, wanted an R.I. Superior Court judge to block an alleged agreement between her sister and Syfy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” star Jason Hawes to sell the home for $1.3 million. Hawes’ attorney, Nicole Labonte, told WPRI the agreement was reached after a notary who witnessed documents related to the planned sale “recently indicated that she would testify under oath in court that she violated state law by failing to properly witness and notarize such documents.” Hawes told WPRI he remains committed to purchasing the property despite the setback In her lawsuit, Elizabeth Greenhalgh of Utah claims her sister wasn’t mentally competent when she signed over limited power of attorney to Hawes’ associate, Julia Demay, to “do all things necessary with respect to the sale of [the home] with Jason Hawes." Greenhalgh claims Nuñez “was legally incompetent and not of sound mind” when she signed over the rights to Demay to sell the home. She accused Hawes of conspiring with Demay and leading a “concerted effort to acquire the property,” despite knowing Nuñez was unwell, according to the report. “Nuñez told [me] on multiple occasions that she would never sell the property – especially not to Hawes,” Greenhalgh wrote in the documents previously obtained by WPRI-TV. She added that Nuñez has suffered from “various delusions” over the past year that include accusing Greenhalgh and her husband of having “engaged in criminal activity that has absolutely no basis in reality.” The home, built in 1826 and located on 8.5 acres of land at 1677 Round Top Road in Burrillville, features three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and four fireplaces. Stories of the paranormal at the 14-room farmhouse were depicted in “The Conjuring” horror movie in 2013. The house is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of its former occupant, Bathsheba Sherman, a supposed witch accused of killing children in the 1800s. The home was scheduled to be auctioned after Nuñez stopped making payments on the loan she used to buy the property for $1.5 million in 2022. However, the company controlled by YouTuber Elton Castee purchased the underlying note, canceling the Halloween bidding.
