The new tour was made possible by a $4,500 grant from the Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism given to the Rhode Island Historical Society for research and development.

The grant comes from the AC+T’s Project Fund for the Arts, which currently has about $20,000. Grants for the Project Fund for the Arts are typically between $500 and $4,500, according to a representative for the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism.

This is the first grant for Providence Rhode Tours from the department.

The RIHS said the Smith Hill neighborhood was chosen “for its robust yet often neglected history.”

The tour will focus on Smith Hill’s social and architectural development from the 1850s through the present day.

A free community event will take place on Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at The 400 at 400 Smith St. in Providence. The event will feature refreshments from local vendors and a presentation on the new tour.

The Rhode Tour now features 18 tours and 200 stories.
