Assistant Adjutant General for Army Served as Interim Adjutant General
CRANSTON – Major General Robert T. Bray, adjutant general of Rhode Island, announced today that Brigadier General John L. Enright, the R.I. BG Enright joined the Army in March 1967 and received his commission from the Army Field Artillery Officer Candidate School on Jan. 16, 1968. He graduated from the Army Rotary Wing Aviator Course in March 1969.
BG Enright served in the Republic of Vietnam from April 1969 through July 1970, where he earned the Bronze Star and 23 Air Medals while conducting rotary wing operations as a pilot. Following his tour in Vietnam, he was assigned as an Instructor Pilot in the Department of Graduate Flight Training at Fort Rucker, Ala.
BG Enright joined the R.I. National Guard immediately upon release from active duty in July 1971. He was assigned as a pilot in the former Troop E, 43rd Cavalry. He has held numerous duty and command positions in his tenure as a full-time member of the R.I. Army National Guard, including: Platoon Leader/Operations Officer/Executive Officer/Commander, Troop D, 1/126th Cavalry Regiment; Commander 1/126th Aviation Regiment; Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2/103rd FA Group; Commander 56th Troop Command; Staff Officer, Headquarters State Area Command; Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, R.I. Army National Guard; and Chief of Staff, R.I. Army National Guard.
In addition to his current responsibilities, BG Enright also served as interim adjutant general for the State of Rhode Island from September 2005 through March 2006
BG Enright is a Master Army Aviator with 6,980 hours flight time. Among his many other awards, he has also been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.
BG Enright is a graduate of Bryant College where he earned a BS degree in Business Administration. He also holds a master’s degree in international relations from Salve Regina University and is a graduate of the Army War College.
Hewill relinquish his command in a ceremony at Camp Fogarty, 2841 South County Trail (Route 2) East Greenwich, at 3 PM on Sunday, May 6.
Assuming command as the new Assistant Adjutant for Army will be recently promoted BG Brian Goodwin.
“We are losing a true American patriot with the retirement of BG Enright,” said MG Bray.
“A decorated warrior whose combat service in Vietnam is truly noteworthy, he has long been one of the cornerstones of this great RI Army National Guard for the past 30 years. His service to state and country has been extraordinary and he remains a role model for all those who follow. We wish him and his family the best as he embarks upon a much deserved retirement,” Bray said.
Enright is a native of Providence and a graduate of Hope High School.
He lives in Pawtucket with his wife, the former Karen Farrell. They have two children, John and Kathleen.
