PROVIDENCE – “Gasoline prices in Rhode Island tumbled by an average of 11 cents per gallon last week, falling under the $4 mark for the first time since Memorial Day,” AAA Southeastern New England said today in its weekly fuel price report.
AAA’s July 28 survey found the average self-serve price for unleaded regular gasoline was averaging $3.959 per gallon in the Ocean State, after falling 11 cents in the past week and 14 cents over the past two weeks. But it remained 82 cents above the local price at the beginning of the year and $1.05 higher than the average local price a year ago, when the average self-serve price was $2.909 per gallon.

Nationwide, the average price of self-serve regular fell 11 cents to $3.95, 11 cents below the $4.06 average price in the week ended July 14 and 15 cents below the July 7 high of $4.10 per gallon.
Meanwhile, the range in prices for self-serve regular at Ocean State stations this week widened to 33 cents, from a low of $3.799 to a high of $4.129, AAA said. The nonprofit auto club continued to urge motorists to shop around.
Average self-serve prices for other grades of fuel this week were $4.10 for midgrade unleaded gasoline (down 10 cents over the past week); $4.20 for premium unleaded (down 11 cents); and $4.899 for diesel (down 7 cents).
