PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission this week launched an online database of Ocean State properties that are listed the National Register of Historic Places.
The database is searchable and available to the public. It lists the more than 16,000 Rhode Island properties whose historical and architectural significance have won them spots on the federal government’s official list of sites worthy of preservation.

The Web site will be useful for researchers, residents and visitors, RIHPHC Executive Director Edward F. Sanderson said in a statement yesterday. “The information is free, organized and easy to access,” he said. “We hope that it will help our Web site visitors take full advantage of our state’s historical treasures.”
The site – at www.ri.gov/ preservation/search – allows for searches by city, property address, building style, historic function and current function. It was through a collaboration between the Preservation & Heritage Commission and the development team at www.ri.gov.
The R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission – the state office for historic preservation – operates a statewide historical preservation program that identifies and protects historic buildings, districts, structures and archaeological sites.
