WASHINGTON – Title I federal funding of Rhode Island public schools will increase by $3.1 million or 6.7 percent in fiscal 2007, to more than $50.3 million, according to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
The Title I program is the primary source of federal support for low-income children in preschool through grade 12. Its support goes mostly to younger children; 12 percent of students served are in preschool or kindergarten and 65 percent are in grades one to six.

“It is essential for the federal government to help provide local schools with the resources they need to educate our young people,” Reed said in his announcement. “Title I is an important source of funding for many of our school districts, and I am pleased Rhode Island will be getting an increase in federal support this year.”
About one-third of Rhode Island schools receive Title I grants. For a school to qualify, 40 percent or more of its students typically must come from low-income families.
