RIDE awards $331K to support homeless students

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Education announced more than $331,000 in grants to support homeless students around the state.

RIDE granted the funds to eight districts via McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act Education for Homeless Children and Youth subgrants. Projects funded had to demonstrate that they provide temporary, special and supplementary services to meet the unique needs of homeless students, as well as a well-developed project that facilitates enrollment, attendance and success in school of homeless students.

The federally funded subgrants are renewable for up to three years.

  • Providence: $45,000
  • Woonsocket: $45,000
  • Middletown: $44,572
  • West Warwick: $41,951
  • Central Falls: $41,899
  • North Kingstown: $37,240
  • Warwick: $31,138

“Homeless students are among our most vulnerable populations, and the challenges that these students face impact their academic, physical and social emotional well-being,” said Angélica Infante-Green, R.I. commissioner of elementary and secondary education, in a statement. “There are many ways that we can and must support students and families facing homelessness, and McKinney-Vento grants are an important resource that help us drive that work.”
