RIDOT to begin exit renumbering of I-195 in Dec.

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin its renumbering of exits on Interstate 195 from Interstate 95 to the Massachusetts border in East Providence starting Dec. 2, the department announced Tuesday.

The renumbering process has been taking place across the state, changing the current sequential system into a mile-marker system to come into compliance to a Federal Highway Administration mandate. RIDOT has already completed exit renumbering of Route 295 in 2017, Routes 478 and 403 in 2018, and numbering Route 146 in 2019.

RIDOT noted that New England states were among the last adopters of the mile-marker system in the country. Massachusetts recently announced it will begin the renumbering process in 2020.

Rhode Island will have old exit numbers on display for a time to allow drivers to transition to the new system.

The department said the latest contract will also renumber Route 10, from Park Avenue in Cranston to Route 6 in Providence, and Route 37 from Post Road in Warwick to Natick Avenue in Cranston. All three projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

RIDOT also said it will renumber Route 24 from the Massachusetts line in Tiverton to West Main Road in Portsmouth next spring.
