PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transit Authority has awarded a contract to Innovations In Transportation Inc., of Virginia, to update and streamline RIPTA’s fare collection system.

The update will allow passengers to pay bus fare using reusable “smart” cards, mobile phone applications, the creation of a new online account system and the option to purchase fare products at more retail locations throughout Rhode Island.

The project is expected to cost approximately $5.5 million, according to Barbara Polichetti, director of public affairs at RIPTA.

“RIPTA is excited to bring this innovative technology to our statewide transit system,” said Amy Pettine, interim CEO of RIPTA, in a statement. “This update will not only make it easier for riders to manage their fares but RIPTA will become more accessible for all users, from our daily commuters to weekend visitors. … Fare products will be available at the touch of a fingertip.”

Cards will be similar to Massachusetts’ CharlieCard system, RIPTA said, however, users will be able to add value to their cards online.

The project will involve the installation of computerized validators on existing fareboxes. The new fare payment system will be available on all RIPTA fixed route buses, Flex vans and RIde paratransit vehicles.

The project also involves the distribution and sale of prepaid fare products at up to 400 retail locations.

The project is expected to take 18 months to launch.
