RIPTA eager to talk to Lincoln Park

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transit Authority’s buses still are not stopping at Lincoln Park, and a RIPTA spokeswoman says the park hasn’t been in touch.

Asked what she knew about the agency’s talks with the gambling venue, RIPTA spokeswoman Karen Mensel replied: “I know what I read in the paper this morning.”

“I guess Rep. Charlene Lima has jumped in,” seeking to bring Lincoln Park to the bargaining table and establish a safe location within the park where RIPTA can pick up and drop off passengers, she told Providence Business News this morning.

“If that’s the case, that’s terrific,” Mensel said. “We did not leave voluntarily. … We received a letter dated March 8 from Lincoln Park, telling us to please leave.”

But, she added, though Lincoln Park executives reportedly have said they will meet today with RIPTA officials, “They haven’t been in touch.”

“There maybe is a glitch on our end,” Mensel said. “Our general manager is in D.C., and our assistant G.M. for planning …. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.”

“We are eager to get this worked out in favor of our customers, who are also Lincoln Park’s customers,” Mensel said.

Lincoln Park executives have not responded to the Providence Business News’ repeated requests for comment.

Since yesterday, inbound and outbound trips on RIPTA Route 54 (Lincoln/Woonsocket) have been dropping off passengers at the Lincoln State Police Barracks instead of at Lincoln Park. In a statement Monday, Alfred J. Moscola, RIPTA’s general manager, directed inquiries about the decision to George Papanier, Lincoln Park’s president.
