PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transit Authority has received $4.2 million in federal funding for safety and technology upgrades, the state’s congressional delegation announced last week.
RIPTA will use the money to integrate into a digital emergency communications system and the R.I. Statewide Communications Network, or RISCON, system. RISCON is designed to provide voice and data communications for first responders, emergency service personnel and other state agencies.

The funding also will allow RIPTA to invest in new technologies, retiring its old analog system, which the agency said will save $19,000 per month in maintenance costs.
“This is a smart investment that will save money in the long run and enhance public safety by bolstering RIPTA’s communication system,” U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said in a statement.
RISCON is under the authority of the R.I. Emergency Management Agency’s Interoperable Communications Committee. The federal funding was provided under the Transit Security Grant Program.
