Roger Williams earns designation from United Nations

BRISTOL – Roger Williams University says the United Nations’ Department of Public Information has declared the school an associated nongovernmental organization – one of fewer than 20 higher education institutions with an NGO designation.
That status – typically bestowed on humanitarian and global policy agencies – recognizes RWU’s “commitment to global perspectives,” said Roy J. Nirschel, the university’s president.
RWU said the U.N. decision followed an extensive application process in which the university had to illustrate its commitment to global issues, particularly those important to the U.N. The application also contained recommendations from The World Affairs Council of Rhode Island and Brown University.
The NGO designation will allow the university global opportunities and to develop global-affairs programming “typically not available to a university,” said Guilan Wang, associate provost for global affairs at RWU. &#8226
