BRISTOL – Three new varsity sports programs will be competing at Roger Williams University within the next two academic years.
The university announced in early September that it will add men’s and women’s ice hockey, and women’s golf to its varsity athletic offerings. Men’s hockey and women’s golf will begin competing in the 2025-26 academic year, RWU says, while women’s hockey will start in the 2026-27 academic year.

John King, RWU’s vice president for student life, said in a statement the new hockey teams are the direct result of the men’s hockey club team, which in 2020 played in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Nationals competition. The university will continue the club team alongside the new varsity program.
With women’s golf coming aboard, RWU will be the sixth Conference of New England school to offer the sport. As a result, the conference will have enough programs to secure an automatic NCAA postseason bid for the conference champion, RWU says.
