Ryan becomes first woman to be elected majority leader of Providence City Council

PROVIDENCE – The City Council has elected Councilwoman Jo-Ann Ryan, D-Ward 5, as majority leader for the 2019-2023 term, making her the first woman to hold the senior leadership position, the council announced Jan. 7.

First elected to the council in 2014, Ryan is the chairwoman of the council’s Special Committee on Municipal Operations and Oversight. She previously served as the council’s majority whip and on several council committees, including finance and ordinance, among others.

As a member of the finance committee, Ryan helped deliver a balanced budget, resulting in the re-establishment of the city’s rainy-day fund.

Ryan also was able to secure $6 million in investments to improve Ward 5 neighborhood schools, parks and the library, as well as opened the Armand E. Batastini Jr. Recreation Center, the first in Ward 5.
