CRANSTON – Saab, a Swedish aerospace and defense company that set up a maritime division in Cranston last spring, announced Tuesday it has received a $5.8 million contract from the U.S. Navy for anti-submarine warfare training target production.
If production meets the Navy’s early testing requirements, the contract will be extendended over 10 years, with a potential value of up to $173.2 million in deliveries.

Saab, formerly a car manufacturing company, announced in May that it would partner with SyQwest echo sounders manufacturer to launch an Autonomous and Undersea Systems Division on Kenney Drive in Cranston.
The MK39 Expendable Mobile Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Target (EMATT) is a relatively small device, about the size of a sonobuoy and weighing less than 25 pounds, which simulates a submarine, allowing Navy teams “to train their detection, tracking and weapon employment skills against a threat representative target,” according to the Navy’s Office of Information.
The EMATT has been in production since 2016, and under the contract, Saab will provide modernization updates to the device.
Saab has over 700 employees and seven locations in the U.S.

Saab is the Swedish acronym for Swedish airplane limited company (Sweden’s terminology for a corporation. It’s original mission was to construct Swedish made airplanes for the Swedish military just prior to WWII. Shortly after WWII (Sweden remained neutral) as part of post war de-militarization it began producing its famed autos. The original 90s series autos’ teardrop shape and other design and mechanical functions (The fan was originally placed behind the original 2 stroke engine) elements evidence that heritage. Saab also built trucks and buses. That business continues under a different corporate structure. The auto side of the company was spun off to a joint venture with GM, which later shut it down. It has continued to manufacture airplanes for the Swedish Airforce & for export. After several other corporate iterations, in addition to its airplane manufacturing, Saab is now an aerospace and defense company.
