THE ACCUCIRC DEVICE, used for more than 10 years in Africa, has successfully undergone four clinical trials, along with earning worldwide praise from health care experts and approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Now SafeCirc, the South Kingstown-based company that produces AccuCirc, has its sights set on the United States.
The brand, established in 2019, plans to open a clinic next year in Rhode Island as the first of a series of locations across the country. Using the AccuCirc device, the clinics will provide a safer and better-timed circumcision option for newborns, SafeCirc CEO Mark King said.
Dr. David Tomlinson, a family practice doctor at South County Hospital and clinical assistant professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, invented AccuCirc after finding the standard clamps available for circumcisions less than ideal.
The clamps, which are generally used during the first few hours after a baby boy’s birth, can lead to complications and injuries, Tomlinson said. Further, studies have shown that circumcision can help protect adult men against HIV.
Tomlinson originally developed the AccuCirc for use in areas of the world with high rates of the virus and sparse health care resources.
Designed for use by non-physician providers, such as nurse midwives, the prepackaged AccuCirc features a protected blade to make a precise cut, and is designed for just one use.
“It is like no other device out there today. The AccuCirc was developed to offer not only a choice in newborn circumcision care but to make it a safe procedure,” King said. “The proprietary internal blade ensures the newborn is protected before, during and after the procedure, with no extra, unnecessary incisions required.”
While Tomlinson’s original goal was to help babies in Africa, he is excited about the company’s new domestic focus.
“When you come to our clinic, you’re going to know exactly which clamp is used on your baby,” Tomlinson said.
