Schilling unveils ‘Kingdoms of Amalur’

BOSTON – Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling attended the PAX East gaming conference at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on March 11 to present the first preview of “Kingdoms of Amalur” to a crowd of 700, the Boston Globe reported.

“We’re a fantasy RPG,’’ said Schilling, founder and chairman of 38 Studios LLC. “That’s not really new.’’

Nevertheless, Schilling said Kingdoms of Amalur, slated to go on sale in 2012, will deliver “superior playing experience” to stand out from the crowd.

Players will be able to wander freely through the game’s environments – rather than being limited to a single path – and search for up to 2 million pieces of “virtual loot” including weapons and tools.

The game’s lead designer, Ian Frazier, also promised a simpler combat system so gamers wouldn’t have to memorize complex commands.

The 2012 sale date for “Kingdoms of Amalur” is partially due to concerns on competition from versions of best-selling titles, including “Mass Effect,” “Oblivion” and “Diablo,” set to roll out later this year.

No release date has been set yet for the massive multiplayer online game currently code-named “Copernicus,” the Boston Globe said.
