Shawmut Design and Construction recently sent employee volunteers to Mississippi to assist Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization, in its reconstruction program aimed helping the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast.
As part of the Rebuild 1000 initiative, Shawmut sent nine employees to Waveland, Miss., to help repair houses still damaged more than two years after Hurricane Katrina. Volunteer efforts focused on rebuilding residential six residential structures without cost to the home owners.
Martine Taylor, executive director of Rebuilding Together Boston, and Jane Upper, executive director of Rebuilding Together Providence, worked to coordinate participation from the New England region.
“We are pleased that organizations such as Shawmut Design and Construction are able to lend support to this effort,” said Taylor.
Frank Hayes, vice president of Shawmut, said there was a tremendous response from the staff to management’s request for volunteers to participate this year. “Community service is one of our company values, and our participation with Rebuilding Together goes back nearly a decade,” he said. •
