PROVIDENCE – A former senior employment interviewer with the R.I. Department of Labor and Training on April 3 was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for conspiring to commit mail fraud and theft of government funds.
Ambulai R. Sheku, 37, of Providence, was also found guilty of accessing a protected computer to commit fraud while he was employed at DLT from June 2009 to February 2015.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge William E. Smith also ordered Sheku to serve three years supervised release upon completion of his prison term and to pay restitution of $486,366.
The scheme resulted in a loss to DLT of approximately $508,691, of which approximately $350,606 were federal funds.
The matter was investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, R.I. State Police and the U.S. Department of Labor, with the assistance of DLT and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. n
