PROVIDENCE – The Town of Smithfield has asked the R.I. Department of Transportation to include on its Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) list installation of exit and entrance ramps at the intersection of Interstate 295 and Route 116.
State Sen. John J. Tassoni Jr. (D-Smithfield) said that asking the DOT to put ramp work on the TIP list is indicative of town officials’ commitment to improving travel in an area that has seen commercial growth and a corresponding increase in traffic in the past few years.
“Due to expansion of Fidelity Investments, the 1,000 new jobs that this has created and the ancillary building boom in the area, there has been much more traffic the past few years and the addition of ramps at the I-295 and Route 116 intersection would significantly ease backups and facilitate traffic flow,” Tassoni said. •
