Smithfield eyewear designer appoints CEO

Alec Taylor has been appointed chief executive officer of Smithfield-based FGX International Limited, a global leader in branded and private label eyewear. He will also become a member of the company’s board of directors. Taylor was formerly president and chief operating officer of Chattem Inc. of Chattanooga, Tenn.

PBN: What is your vision for FGX?

TAYLOR: I think FGX can be the dominant player in the over-the-counter (non-prescription) eye care business. We’re headed there now and have very strong brands in Foster Grant and Magnivision. I want to continue our strong presence in costume jewelry as well. I think the potential also exists to broaden our horizons and be a key player in other personal accessory areas.

PBN: Who is FGX’s target market?
TAYLOR: Everyone is our target! Actually, we want the teenage sunglass buyer to purchase our Anarchy, Angel and Gargoyle brands, the adult to buy our Foster Grant sunglasses whether they be a value shopper or someone looking for higher fashion items – we have it all – or the person who needs reading glasses and buys either our Foster Grant or Magnivision readers.

PBN: Is the company looking to expand into different markets?
TAYLOR: We would like to expand into other personal accessory areas. FGX is a great platform with strong brands and excellent distribution channels.

PBN: What factors have made FGX so successful?
TAYLOR: Great brands, excellent designs, good sales programs and financial discipline have made FGX successful.

PBN: Why is Rhode Island a good location for FGX?
TAYLOR: Rhode Island is a good location for FGX because of the excellent talent here in fashion design and the rich history Rhode Island has in the jewelry business. Also, our location puts us nearby to most of the major East Coast population centers so distribution of our products is easier and less costly.
