Smithfield High students in Reserve Cup

SMITHFIELD – A four-member team from Smithfield High School is representing Rhode Island in the Reserve Cup Challenge Tuesday, a competition held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston that tests students’ knowledge of personal finance and economics.
The Smithfield students – Brent Barrows, Michaela Fournier, Andrew Langellier and Alyssa Towne – will compete with teams from the other New England states for the Reserve Cup.
Smithfield beat out high schools teams from Barrington, Chariho, Tolman and Lincoln by answering all 10 questions correctly in the finals of the Rhode Island competition on Nov. 6.
Officials at Smithfield High School said the showing highlights the effectiveness of the school’s Academy of Finance, where students apply to enroll in a curriculum focused on business and finance.
“This victory is yet another example that our academy concept works,” said Stephen Rocco, director of Smithfield’s academy.
Jim Hedemark, executive director of the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition, said the financial literacy group has ccordinated the Ocean State’s participation in the three-year-old competition. In 2007, North Providence High School won the Reserve Cup.
