Smiths unit to expand MTA security program

NEWPORT — The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded Smiths Detection-LiveWave a $3.2 million contract to engineer and deploy an advanced security system.
The program involves the integration of chemical sensors and security camera systems in New York City-area transit stations to enhance public safety as well as for law-enforcement applications. It is funded by the MTA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Smiths Detection will subcontract the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory to implement a program it developed called “PROTECT.” The program initially was deployed for the MTA prior to the 2004 Republican National Convention. The new contract will expand PROTECT into other areas for the MTA.
Smiths Detection is part of the global technology business Smiths Group plc.
