PROVIDENCE – South Kingstown was ranked as the “safest city in Rhode Island” by SafeWise’s 2018 Safest Cities report.
The report was based on 2016 FBI crime report statistics, the most recent available data. Cities were ranked on their violent crime rate (incidents per 1,000 residents).

South Kingstown experienced 0.42 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. The report also noted that the town had 8.07 property crimes per 1,000 residents. South Kingstown ranked No. 7 in 2017.
Smithfield was reported to be the second safest city in the state for 2018 at 0.55 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. The town also had 9.51 property crimes per 1,000 residents. Following in third, Warwick reported 0.75 violent crimes per 1,000 people. The city was also reported to have 19.94 property crimes per 1,000 residents.
Rounding out the top five were Bristol with 0.81 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and Westerly at 0.84 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
In 2017 Glocester was ranked the safest city in the Ocean State, while Scituate ranked No. 2 and Portsmouth ranked No. 3.
Rankings six through 10 for 2018:
- North Kingstown: No. 6 – 0.84 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
- Lincoln: No. 7 – 0.92 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
- Cumberland: No. 8 – 1.01 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
- Portsmouth – 1.04 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
- North Providence – 1.32 violent crimes per 1,000 residents
