NEW BEDFORD – After three years and $33 million, St. Luke’s Hospital of New Bedford cut the ribbon on its redesigned Emergency Department, three renovated inpatient floors, an expanded cardiac catherization lab and a new ampitheater for medical education and conferences.
Helping the hospital staff celebrate today were local dignitaries that included John B. Day, president and CEO of Southcoast Health Systems, and New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang was U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass.
“I am pleased that I was able to play a role in helping St. Luke’s carry out this important emergency room renovation project,” said Frank. “If we had a better overall health care system in this country, emergency rooms might not play as significant a part, but unitl we reach that point, it is especially important to have upt-to-date facilities like this one.”
The emergency room at St. Luke’s treats 73,000 patients per year, making it one of the state’s busiest, said the hospital.

Southcoast Health System is a nonprofit, community-based health system and includes Charlton Memorial Hospital of Fall River and Tobey Hospital of Wareham, along with St. Luke’s. For more information, go to www.southcoast.org.
