PROVIDENCE – Earning a bachelor’s degree in the state will no longer have to take four years.
Students enrolling at Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island will have the option of completing their degree in three years, under legislation recently signed by Gov. Donald L. Carcieri.
The measure will allow students to apply advanced placement, dual enrollment and other credit-bearing courses taken in high school to their college program, potentially shaving a year off their college education and tuition costs.
Called the “Bachelor’s Degree in Three” program, the legislation was introduced earlier this year with the support of the URI, RIC, the Community College of Rhode Island as well as the state offices of higher education and elementary and secondary education.
The state Board of Governors for Higher Education will establish and administer the “Bachelor’s Degree in Three” program. •
