Suffolk to renovate two Brown halls

BOSTON – The renovations of two Brown University residence halls, Caswell and Slater halls, will be managed by Boston-based Suffolk Construction’s education branch, the company announced this month.
The company will relocate kitchens, alter floor plans and renovate lounges and restrooms. Suffolk also will relocate the building’s utilities.
The construction-management firm, one of the country’s largest, recently completed renovations on the university’s Brown Bookstore, as well as Barbour and Hegeman halls.
Although the renovations of Barbour and Hegeman halls were of similar size and scope, the renovations of Caswell and Slater halls will “present logistical challenges” because the buildings are “adjacent to numerous academic and administrative buildings and student [and] pedestrian passageways, which will complicate construction material deliveries and storage,” according to Suffolk.
In Brown University’s most recent Institutional Master Plan, submitted in March 2006, the school said it planned during the next five years to invest $336 million in new or renovated facilities for research, teaching and student activity.
