Survey: Tans still desired despite risks

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – A survey by the American Academy of Dermatology has found that tans remain hugely popular and are still associated with a healthier and more attractive appearance, though people also want to protect themselves from skin cancer.
The “Suntelligence: How Sun Smart is Your City?” online survey polled more than 7,000 adults nationwide to determine their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors toward tanning, sun protection and skin cancer, which affects about 1 in 5 Americans.
Seventy-two percent of respondents said people look more attractive with a tan – including 76 percent of men and 68 percent of women. Two-thirds of respondents said people look healthier with a tan, and 60 percent said sun exposure is good for your health.
