About 11 percent of the R.I. National Guard’s new 81,000-square-foot joint force headquarters adjacent to Camp Fogarty has been built. The two-story facility, costing $25 million to construct and being built on a 22-acre site, will serve as a command and control center, which will offer support for training, administrative and logistical requirements for both the U.S. Army and National Guard. Ground broke on the new headquarters last November. The project, expected to be completed in September, is being funded with $20 million secured by Sen. Jack F. Reed, D-R.I., in the fiscal 2017 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill, and the balance being paid by Rhode Island. The facility will also include technologically advanced classrooms and training facilities, a large multipurpose room and allow National Guard personnel to train. A 450-person auditorium to be used for training, ceremonies, briefings and as an operations information center in the event of weather or other catastrophic events will also be part of the new facility. Pond & Co., of Atlanta, is the architect and Maron Construction, of Providence, is the general contractor. / COURTESY R.I. NATIONAL GUARD
