WARWICK – The new intermodal facility at T.F. Green Airport will open Oct. 27, the R.I. Airport Corporation announced Monday.
Known as the InterLink, the facility includes a commuter rail station, a parking garage, intercity bus connections and space for car rental companies. A pedestrian bridge spanning Post Road connects the facility directly to the airport terminal.
The airport corporation said car rental companies will start operating out of the new facility effective Oct. 27.
Commuter rail service provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is expected to begin by the end of the year, R.I. Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin said Monday.
Airport officials tout the InterLink as a way to draw passenger traffic from southeastern Massachusetts and even Boston. That could help reverse declining passenger numbers at Green.
“Access to the airport will be as easy as a commuter train ride to the InterLink stop, where passengers will connect to a moving sidewalk, which takes them into the terminal,” corporation President Kevin Dillon told Providence Business News last month. “The commuter rail service that connects to Boston and runs through the densely populated area from 128 South will be attractive to business and leisure travelers, who want a more seamless way of traveling.”
The name InterLink partly comes from a team of Bryant University students. They responded to a contest that sought to brand the building known during construction as the Intermodal Facility. The students suggested Link, a name expanded on by the airport corporation’s advertising firm, the RDW Group.
The InterLink is one of two MBTA stations under construction in Rhode Island, with the other at Wickford Junction in North Kingstown. Officials broke ground on that station and accompanying parking garage in August. That project is expected to be finished by late next year or early 2012.
