The Metropolitan Career and Technical Center (The Met) is hosting a breakfast for mental health professionals in Rhode Island on March 3 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the school, aiming to expand its services and network in the community to better serve students.
The event is meant to allow mental health providers to learn about the school and deepen their understanding of the work it does.
Funded by the state, the Met serves 690 high school students in six small schools across three campuses in Rhode Island. It has four small schools at 325 Public St. on Providence’s South Side, a campus on the West End at 362 Dexter St., plus one at 1 York St. in Tonomy Hill/Newport Heights in Newport. There is also a comprehensive counseling team that works with students across the six campuses.
The Met was also the first Big Picture Learning School. Since then, Big Picture has grown into a network of 60 schools throughout the United States, all of which focus on student-centered learning. Big Picture Learning schools are also underway in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Liberia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
As part of the Met’s “whole child” approach, primary and preventive health and mental health services are woven into the daily work with the students.
