Trinity Rep offers ‘sensory-friendly’ performances

PROVIDENCE – Providence-based Trinity Repertory Co. will offer adjusted theater performances for people on the autism spectrum or those with sensory-processing disorders for each of its 2017-2018 performances.

These performances will be identical to the original, except a lantern will be placed in the theatre to let audience members know when a loud sound or intense lighting will occur – giving them the opportunity to cover their ears. In addition, there will be a safe space in the lobby for guests who would like a break from the show.

The sensory-friendly series includes performances of “Death of Salesman” (Oct. 17), “Skeleton Crew” (Nov. 21), “Into the Breeches!” (Feb. 20, 2018), “Othello” (March 13, 2018), “Native Gardens” (May 1, 2018) and “Ragtime” (May 22, 2018).

Sensory-Friendly Plus! performances of “A Christmas Carol” (Nov. 18 at 12 p.m.) as well as “Ragtime” (May 26, 2018 at 2 p.m.) will be held during the season. During these performances, guests are encouraged to make noise and the lights will stay on throughout.
