Tufts Health Plan wants its employees to ‘BeWell’

NEARLY ALL – 95% – of Tufts Health Plan team members participate in employee well-being programs. BeWell Center offerings include flu shots and smoking-cessation classes, said Kristine Martel, Tufts’ vice president of human resources. Tufts’ WorkingWell Center offers fitness coaching and equipment.

Cross-promotion of services is a huge part of fostering overall wellness. “If you go to the BeWell Center and realize you are pre-diabetic, you can get a warm transfer to WorkingWell Center,” where, Martel said, staff can create programs to help employees there also – all confidential and for free. Tufts found that employees who use its wellness services are more likely to use others.

‘There is such a convenience in having these wellness services on-site. It’s easier for employees than it would be to call and arrange to see someone on the outside.’

The services aim to appeal to all, from endurance athletes to those interested in learning healthier cooking. Programs are offered in various ways to maximize reach. Tufts’ Spring Forward with Strengths survey took wellness into another realm, Martel said.

“Results might show their strengths as hope, kindness or curiosity,” Martel said. “For many, it was an a-ha moment. You can apply these strengths – at home, work, as a parent – to push through, to make you resilient.”
