UMass receives $150K lab device for testing

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Medical Laboratory Science Department, and touted the donation of a $150,000 lab device by pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories.
The Cell-Dyn 3200 can perform 20 tests on a single blood sample and can identify illnesses such as leukemia and anemia. Abbott Laboratories, based in Abbott Park, Ill., also pledged to cover the cost of maintenance.
The donation, part of the company’s Labs Are Vital program, was made in the fall, but UMass Dartmouth’s first public recognition of the gift came last month during a celebration of the MLS Department’s anniversary, which highlighted the department’s partnerships with area hospitals and bio-tech companies. •
