PROVIDENCE – A tentative agreement between union workers and Stop & Shop LLC was reached over the weekend, both parties announced Sunday.

Union members of United Food and Commercial Workers locals 328, 371, 1445, 1459 and 919, which represent more than 31,000 New England workers, said that the agreement preserved the union workers’ health care, retirement benefits and pay-and-a-half Sunday shifts and included wage increases.

“We are incredibly grateful to our customers and everyone who proudly stood together with us every day for a contract that invests in the communities we serve, and makes Stop & Shop a better place to work and a better place to shop,” the UFCW said in a statement.

Union members have returned to work following the tentative agreement.

“Our associates’ top priority will be restocking our stores so we can return to taking care of our customers and communities and providing them with the service they deserve. We deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers during this time, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Stop & Shop,” the company said in a statement Sunday.

The strike began with workers walking off the job on April 11. The unions will now vote on the contract, however, the votes have yet to be scheduled, according to a UFCW spokeswoman.
