Upcoming road closures for NGA Summer Meeting announced

PROVIDENCE – Several road closures have been announced ahead of the upcoming National Governors Association Summer Meeting this week, the R.I. State Police and the Providence Police Department announced Tuesday.

NGA Summer Meeting events will take place in Providence and Newport Thursday, July 13 through Sunday, July 16.

Providence road closures:

  • West Exchange Street between Sabin Street and the Service Road will be closed to traffic from 12 p.m. on Wednesday to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Mathewson Street from Fountain Street to Weybosset Street on Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m.

Providence lane restrictions on Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. due to an event at the Statehouse and a subsequent special presentation of WaterFire:

  • Memorial Boulevard from Exchange Street to Francis Street
  • Francis Street from Memorial Boulevard to Hayes Street
  • Hayes Street to Smith Street
  • Gaspee Street from Francis Street to Smith Street

The police departments warn people who live and work in Providence to expect increased traffic, and acknowledge there will be other temporary road closures and lane restrictions during the course of the event.

The Rhode Island Convention Center will be closed to the public all four days of the Summer Meeting.

The police also noted protesters will be directed to Mathewson Street at Sabin Street.
