URI adds undergraduate biopharmaceutical track

Thanks to a $75,000 gift from an alumnus, the University of Rhode Island has created a new course of study for undergraduates interested in careers in the biopharmaceutical industry.
Starting this fall, chemical engineering students will be able to follow a new academic track in pharmaceutical engineering, one that could lead to employment by companies such as Amgen and Pfizer. Students enrolling in the program will add coursework in pharmacology, as well as a new pharmaceutical engineering course being developed, to the traditional chemical engineering curriculum.
The gift, $50,000 of which is to be used to develop the cross-disciplinary course work, with the remaining $25,000 to be dedicated to scholarships for outstanding students, was from Fougera, a New York firm whose CEO is URI alumnus Paul McGarty. The company produces topical pharmaceuticals for the branded and generic markets, as well as for hospitals.
