SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island’s main library is undergoing a roughly $800,000 project to renovate part of the first floor.
The work at the Robert L. Carothers Library & Learning Commons includes fire safety improvements, asbestos removal and the construction of bathrooms. The area near the reference desk will be revamped to better accommodate small group work.
“The space was actually very wide open space that we’re not using more efficiency,” Vice President of Administration Robert Weygand said.
Cranston-based Tower Construction Corp. is expected to wrap up the project in January 2012. URI is paying for the project through a combination of money from the university and funds from the R.I. Capital Asset Protection Fund.
